Nichrome Tape
The unique properties and advantages of nichrome tape are primarily attributed to the presence of two key components in its composition: nickel and chromium.
Nickel is known for its ability to dissolve various alloying elements while retaining important properties such as plasticity, resistance to high temperatures, and corrosion resistance in both liquid and gaseous environments.
Chromium, on the other hand, exhibits exceptional resistance to corrosion and high temperatures while also being notable for its hardness.
In addition to the primary components, nichrome alloy also contains small amounts of additives, including iron, phosphorus, silicon, titanium, aluminum, manganese, and carbon. However, their combined proportion typically accounts for slightly more than 1% of the alloy.
Key Characteristics and Advantages of Nichrome Tape:
The combination of nickel and chromium imparts remarkable properties to the alloy, resulting in high electrical resistance and outstanding heat resistance:
The X20N80 alloy can withstand temperature increases up to 1200°C.
The X15N60 alloy can withstand temperature increases up to 1125°C.
The alloy’s resistance to elevated temperatures depends primarily on the nickel content within the material.
Nichrome tape possesses corrosion resistance, a low coefficient of thermal expansion, and high specific electrical resistance, making it exceptionally suitable for the efficient production of heating elements capable of performing flawlessly even in highly aggressive environments.
Applications:
The high plasticity of the nickel-chromium alloy allows for the production of tape and strips as thin as 0.1 mm. Nichrome tape is typically supplied in rolls.
Its primary function is to convert electrical potential into thermal energy. As such, it is commonly used in resistors and rheostats for starting applications.
Nichrome tape has also found application in the construction of cargo cranes, particularly in resistor blocks that regulate the startup process. These blocks provide maximum smoothness when initiating electric motors in vehicles and help control the braking process and motor speed in both AC and DC applications.
