Black metal
The use of high-quality rolled metal is necessary in every industry. One of the most popular types of such products is metal rolling from ferrous metals. This product category is represented by steel and various types of cast iron – both pure compositions of these materials and their alloys are used.
Ferrous metals are so-called ferroalloys or alloys, the main element of which is iron. The very name “ferrous metals” becomes clear if you look at a photo of ferrous metals – iron gives them a dark color. The main (and practically the only) ferrous metals are steel and cast iron. But this is a very general division, since there are many varieties and brands of steel and cast iron. Let’s list the main types of steels and cast irons (that’s right, in the plural, as metallurgists say).
So, there are steels:
- structural,
- instrumental,
- special purpose,
- heat resistant,
- stainless (i.e. corrosion-resistant),
- electrotechnical.
Cast irons are divided into: cast iron, cast iron, gray, malleable, low- and high-alloyed, anti-friction, high-nickel, as well as with spherical and vermicular graphite in their composition. This is probably the end of the classification of cast irons, but not everything is so simple with steels. The fact is that we listed only general categories, but each category has its own subtypes.
So, for example, steel for castings can be both ordinary and with special properties, and structural steel – carbon of various quality, alloyed, cryogenic, bearing, increased machinability, as well as high-strength and at the same time highly alloyed.
Tool steels can be carbon, alloy, rolling, stamping and high-speed cutting.
In addition, in addition to heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant steels, there may also be such brands that have both properties – that is, corrosion-resistant and heat-resistant. And, for example, electrical steel can be sulphurous and unalloyed.
