Fechral
Metal alloys play a crucial role in modern production processes.
For instance, consider the primary component of an electric oven: the heating element. The material requirements for this element are stringent, such that none of the known chemical elements can be used individually. It must primarily be heat-resistant due to the high temperatures involved. Some well-known heat-resistant metals include tungsten, nickel, molybdenum, and chromium.
However, heat resistance alone is not sufficient. The material must also possess high specific resistance while keeping density as low as possible. It should be soft, as the production of a heating element, often based on wire or thin tape, requires plasticity and weldability. Resistance to corrosion is also essential.
Two commonly used precision alloys for heating elements are nichrome and fechral.
Fechral, for example, consists of approximately 70% iron (a common and readily available metal), aluminum (also abundant) to provide the necessary lightness and softness, and chromium for its refractory properties.
Fechral alloys come in various types, with X23Y5T being one of the most popular. Its properties are expressed in specific technical terms: electrical resistivity of 1.2–1.3 μΩ•m, density of 7100–7300 kg/m³, and a maximum operating temperature ranging from 750 to 950°C.
However, using this alloy in a thermocycling mode can be challenging due to its recrystallization threshold, which falls within the range of 600 to 650°C. The alloy also exhibits low plasticity.
Fechral wire finds widespread use in powerful electric heating devices and industrial furnaces.
Fechral X23Ю5 wire, or alloy article 837 (W-KAF), has a melting point of 1530°C and a density of 7.1 g/cm³.
Its composition comprises approximately 23% chromium, 72% iron, and 5.6% aluminum. It is suitable for use within the temperature range of 750 to 950°C.
Applications for fechral alloy include electric heating devices and the production of resistor blocks and electrical resistance elements, often created through pressing, drawing, or rolling processes.
